Award Background:The Rogers Family has made a significant impact on tourism in San Marcos overtime. Arthur B. Rogers, built the Aquarena Inn on the headwaters of the San Marcos River in 1928. Later, Paul Rogers launched the first glass bottom boat tour in 1946 — an exciting excursion on Spring Lake that still exists today. Paul’s daughter, Shirley Rogers was an Aqua-Maid during the park’s peak tourist years. An excellent BBC radio dramatization directed by Hattie Naylor also exists. While the final work is digital, the media/imagery utlized includes tea, graphite, ink, canson paper, rusted metal and light reflected from water.
